Learn what makes Arthrex Eclipse unique on the anatomic shoulder arthroplasty market.
This system for anatomic shoulder joint replacement offers a streamlined procedure for repeatable results. Here’s what makes Arthrex Eclipse right for your practice.
Significantly Shorter Operating Time
The implantation of the Arthrex Eclipse requires approximately 20 minutes less than the implantation of a stemmed shoulder arthroplasty system. This is an advantage for the patient due to reduced anesthesia time and blood loss, not to mention the advantage in time management and therefore cost effectiveness.3
Designed With Revisability in Mind
The stemless, bone-sparing approach provides a "primary-like setting" in the event of revision arthroplasty, making future revisions potentially easier and less complex.
Unique Stemless Implant
The Arthrex Eclipse uses a unique cementless anchoring principle with a fenestrated cage screw. It allows for an anatomical reconstruction of the humeral head and has been successfully used in difficult pathologies.
When You Need the Arthrex Eclipse
Total Shoulder Arthroplasty System
Anatomic shoulder arthroplasty surgery? Think Arthrex Eclipse. Here’s how to tell whether this is the right solution for your patients.
End-Stage Arthritis
Irreparable damage to the shoulder joint is a clear indication for this procedure.
Intact Rotator Cuff
This is a prerequisite for anatomic shoulder replacement surgery.
Younger, Athletic Patients
Golfers, surfers, and other younger patients who wish to stay active will benefit from this surgery.
Step by Step to a Healthier Shoulder
Here is an overview of the total shoulderreplacement procedure.
Step 1
Perform the humeral head cut.

Step 2
For sizing, tap the trunnion guide into position and insert the guide pin.

Step 3
Impact the trunnion to the inferior cortex.

Step 4
Advance the cage screw until it is completely seated.

Step 5
Impact the Arthrex Eclipse humeral head into its final resting position.

What Sets Arthrex Eclipse Apart?
The Arthrex Eclipse is unlike any shoulder arthroplasty system on the market. Here are 4 features that make it unique among the competition.
Proprietary Humeral Implant
The Arthrex Eclipse is a stemless implant that allows for an anatomical reconstruction of the humeral head. The implant uses a unique cementless anchoring principle with a fenestrated cage screw. Excellent primary and secondary stabilization is achieved through epiphyseal cortical rim contact of the trunnion reinforced by metaphyseal cage screw fixation.1 Long-term, peer-reviewed literature demonstrates no loosening or subsidence.2 Due to its unique design, the Arthrex Eclipse implant has been successfully used in difficult pathology.
Revisability With Minimal Bone Loss
The Arthrex Eclipse is a bone-sparing anatomical implant. In a revision setting, straightforward implant removal results in minimal trauma leaving intact metaphyseal bone. Revisions to a reverse shoulder arthroplasty have been described as “akin to performing a primary procedure on the humeral side.”15 This revisability conserves sufficient bone stock for all subsequent arthroplasty treatment options as opposed to convertibility.
Accurate Reproduction of Native Anatomy
Restoration of the native anatomy with humeral arthroplasty restores shoulder kinematics, rotator cuff length, soft tissue tension, and longevity of the prosthesis. The Arthrex Eclipse allows for individual anatomic reconstruction of the humeral head based on accurate orientation with the cortical rim of the humeral resection plane. A recent publication highlights the capabilities of the Arthrex Eclipse in reproducing the native anatomy.2
A Decade of Evidence-Based Outcomes
The Arthrex Eclipse stemless shoulder prosthesis exemplifies a clinically proven design. Its efficacy has been substantiated in various publications spanning a range of short-, mid-, and long-term clinical follow-up.2-11

Univers Apex OptiFit™
The Univers Apex OptiFit humeral component maintains all the in situ variable adjustment capabilities of the Univers™ II total shoulder system (inclination, version, head offset), while introducing advanced features important in the treatment of all total shoulder patients.
The reduced diaphyseal stem length, rectangular stem body, and removable trunnion optimize stem removal and therefore revisability. In keeping with the Arthrex focus on intraoperative adaptability, the Apex restores normal patient glenohumeral anatomy in a stable, press-fit solution while allowing for bone-conserving stem revision.

Univers VaultLock Glenoid System
The Univers VaultLock glenoid system offers shoulder surgeons a bone-sparing, anatomic solution for glenoid reconstruction, featuring a fluted central peg for immediate fixation and enhanced operating room efficiency. Its anatomic backside radius of curvature matches glenoid anatomy, while bone-sparing reaming and simplified decision-making streamline the procedure.
The implant combines the stability and ease of preparation found in both pegged and keeled designs, with multiple fixation features such as reverse barbs, flutes, and cement fenestration for superior initial stability. The system also supports subchondral bone preservation and is available in multiple sizes to accommodate patient anatomy, making it an ideal choice for restoring shoulder function and optimizing outcomes.12-14
Univers VaultLock® Augmented Glenoid
The Univers VaultLock augmented glenoid is designed to address glenoid bone loss and deformity in shoulder arthroplasty, offering surgeons precise correction with 15° and 25° augmentation options. Its instrumentation allows for tailored reaming and implant placement, ensuring congruency between the implant and patient anatomy while preserving bone stock.
The system features a central peg for hybrid fixation and modified inferior peg for enhanced rotational stability, with cemented superior and inferior pegs to maximize initial fixation. The comprehensive instrument tray supports efficient, reproducible preparation and trialing, making the Univers VaultLock augmented glenoid an ideal solution for complex glenoid cases requiring anatomical restoration and secure fixation.14

Do you still have questions about the Arthrex Eclipse™ total shoulder system?
How does the Arthrex Eclipse allow for individualized anatomic reconstruction of the humeral head?
The Arthrex Eclipse allows for individualized anatomic reconstruction of the humeral head by enabling the surgeon to orient the implant accurately with the cortical rim of the humeral resection plane. This means the humeral component can be placed independent of the humeral shaft axis, allowing precise replication of the patient’s native anatomy. This approach is especially beneficial in post-traumatic cases where the anatomy may be altered. Additionally, the Arthrex Eclipse system provides superior access to the glenoid compared to humeral head resurfacing.
Are there any drawbacks to using a stemless implant like the Arthrex Eclipse compared to traditional long-stem implants in primary shoulder arthroplasty?
There are no published drawbacks associated with using a stemless implant like the Arthrex Eclipse compared to a traditional long-stem implant in primary shoulder arthroplasty. Some studies have noted that, while radiolucent lines can be a concern with certain stemless designs, the Eclipse implant has not shown significant issues with radiolucent lines or periprosthetic fractures in clinical follow-up. Additionally, stemless implants like the Eclipse have demonstrated decreased early postoperative pain and faster return to function compared to stemmed implants.15,16
What are the key benefits for patients and surgeons when using the Arthrex Eclipse in total shoulder arthroplasty?
There are several key benefits for patients and surgeons when using the Arthrex Eclipse in total shoulder arthroplasty. One is that patients over 70 with glenohumeral arthritis undergoing a TSA with the Arthrex Eclipse have equivalent, if not better, outcomes when compared to younger patients.17 Another is that functional and radiological outcomes of the Arthrex Eclipse stemless TSA are still excellent 5 years after surgery, with no loose humeral components.18 Plus, surgeons can rely on more than 13 years of long-term survivorship data that has demonstrated outcomes comparable to third- and fourth-generation standard stemmed shoulder arthroplasty.11
